Privacy and Child Safety

This page provides information on three areas of site usage and privacy issues:

Safe Content from 3rd Parties
All content will be scrutinized, as will the source site, for compliance with Internet child safety guidelines as set out by the UK government NGFL organization (part of the UK Department of Education) in the document - How to get your website on the National Grid for Learning Website - at http://www.ngfl.gov.uk/downloads/NGfL.pdf
Privacy

In compliance with our registration policy and the guidelines set forth by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU), Kindersite.org is committed to protecting the privacy of each visitor who registers with us. Here is an explanation of our Data Collection process.

Obtaining Parental Consent
Under the USA Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, which went into effect on April, 21, 2000, Kindersite.org will require parental consent in order to keep in our records any registered user information from a child 12 or under. After April 21st, when a child 12 or under registers with us, we will ask for a parent's e-mail address and then write to that e-mail address requesting parental consent. A parent has 21 days to respond with consent. Parents must follow a hotlink from the e-mail letter to a web page where they can give consent or delete their child's registration information. If we do not hear back within 21 days, that child's registration information is deleted from our system. Once we receive parental consent, we will follow-up with a confirmatory e-mail. Parents are invited to review and delete their child's personal information at any time and refuse to permit further collection. All they have to do is visit our registration area from the same browser and machine on which their child registered. There they can review their child's information and, if they choose to delete that information, simply click delete next to the child's name. We also provide all our users - children and adults - with a simple procedure to remove their registration information at any time from any computer.

At the same time, we ask parents to closely monitor the Internet activities of their children and become educated on the various Internet and software tools available to help ensure that their child has a fun and satisfying on-line experience.

What Information We Collect Via Registration
Kindersite.org respects the privacy of its on-line visitors. All registration information is collected on a voluntary basis. We do not ask registered users for a real name or postal address. Instead they are invited to create a fictitious nickname and provide their age, e-mail address, gender, zip code, name of school state and country
How We Use the Registration Information

Kindersite.org uses information from registered users to notify them, from time to time, about new features in Kindersite.org. Note, these nicknames are not personal information or e-mail addresses. No one can contact children on-line or off-line based on these nicknames. We also use registered user information to complete the academic research that is the primary purpose of the Kindersite. We make available our overall number of registered users in publicity documents.

As we explain elsewhere the Kindersite.org website is the visable part of a research tool for academic researchers, in the field of childrens use of Internet Content. It is used to further the understanding of the many questions that face the educational world in understanding how best to use the new tools of Internet and technology in to the education process. The data supplied to accredited researchers, WILL NEVER INCLUDE - the real name, nickname, personal address or name of school of ANY child. Only total numbers will be supplied to the researchers.

Changing Registration Information

Registered users are welcome to view, change or delete their registration information at any time. Simply go to the registration page of Kindersite.org using the same computer from which you initially registered. When the welcome screen appears, you can click on "delete or add".
